Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine – Vanderbilt University

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center seeks a Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine. This section oversees adult and pediatric transfusion and apheresis services at Vanderbilt University Hospital and Clinics and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. These facilities total more than 1,000 inpatient beds, and include a level 1 trauma center, a dedicated regional burn center, and a comprehensive solid organ transplant service. In addition, the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) is an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center that performs more than 300 stem cell transplants annually. Recently, VICC was selected as the only center in the Southeast United States authorized to perform CAR T- cell therapy. In support of these clinical activities, the Transfusion Medicine section, currently composed of 4 full-time faculty, oversees transfusion of approximately 60,000 blood components, 1,170 therapeutic apheresis and red blood cell exchange procedures, and more than 300 stem cell collections annually. In addition, the section provides medical director services for the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System which is also on campus.
The successful applicant will have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree and must be certified by the American Board of Pathology in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
Candidates should have at least 5 years of post-training clinical experience in transfusion medicine. Primary responsibility will be direction and strategic development of the Transfusion Medicine service, including supervision and mentoring of section faculty and coordination of services with other clinical specialties. The Medical Director will work closely with the laboratory operations team in the administration, management, and research and development activities of the blood bank. Additional responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring pathology residents, transfusion medicine fellows, medical technology students, and medical students. The Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology has a substantial portfolio of clinical, translational, and basic science research. The successful applicant should have a robust record of scholarly achievement, and will be expected to lead and strengthen academic activities in the Transfusion Medicine section. Faculty rank and salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
