Clinical Chemist - Vanderbilt University Medical Center

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine invites applications for a highly motivated individual to join the faculty of the Clinical Chemistry service and ComACC Accredited Postdoctoral Fellowship Training Program in Clinical Chemistry.

Acting under the Division Director of Laboratory Medicine, the successful candidate will serve as Medical Director of one or multiple laboratory sections, depending on expertise, and work closely with the other faculty to advance the clinical, research, and educational mission of the VUMC Core Clinical Chemistry, Point of Care Testing and Special Chemistry services. This is a non-tenure track position with academic rank and salary commensurate with experience.  

Interested applicants must have have a doctoral degree (M.D., D.O., and/or Ph.D.) and be board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Chemistry by either the American Board of Pathology (in Clinical Pathology) or American Board of Clinical Chemistry with a minimum of 2-5 years experience directing a high volume clinical laboratory in an academic medical center.  Candidates must have significant experience in clinical consultation of test results as well as experience in method development and performance evaluation of specialized chemistry instrumentation including general laboratory automation, immunoassay analyzers, HPLC, GC or LC/MS-MS. Additional responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring pathology residents, medical technology students, medical students, and clinical chemistry fellows as well as conducting basic or clinical research.  Candidates should have a demonstrated record of academic achievement through independent or collaborative research, and scholarly publications and have an interest in pursuing academic activities. Experience with clinical / translational research and contribution to national professional committees is beneficial.

VUMC is experiencing expansion in many areas and includes a top 20 NCI-designated cancer center, multifaceted solid organ and stem cell transplant programs, and internationally recognized research endeavors in immunology and inflammation, infectious diseases, vaccine development, pharmacology, genomics, and bioinformatics. The VUMC core laboratory  analyzes over 7 million tests a year in support of patient care for the Vanderbilt University Hospital, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and the outreach program of the Vanderbilt Pathology and Laboratory Services.
