Assistant Director of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Serology - Washington University School of Medicine

The Department of Pathology & Immunology and the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis are seeking an Assistant Director of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Serology for the clinical laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH). BJH is a 1250 bed tertiary care hospital that serves a diverse patient population, including oncology, surgical, and transplant services. In addition, the clinical microbiology laboratory provides services for St. Louis Children’s Hospital and several community hospitals in the Barnes-Jewish Consortium (BJC) HealthCare System.

The clinical microbiology section in the Department of Pathology & Immunology is fast-paced and dynamic, home to faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and has a long record of innovation, research, and interfacing in a highly collaborative clinical atmosphere. The BJH Microbiology Laboratory is located in a newly constructed state-of-the art facility, equipped with laboratory automation for bacteriology, extensive space and instrumentation for molecular diagnostics, MALDI-TOF MS, and a BSL-3 laboratory. The laboratory delivers services in bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibly testing, mycobacteriology, parasitology, mycology, virology, infectious disease serology and molecular diagnostics.

Clinical duties for this position will include co-directorship of infectious disease serology and participation in medical director oversight of all areas of the clinical microbiology lab, including the development of test menus and quality programs. The successful applicant will work closely with the Division of Infectious Diseases and other clinical services through day-to-day clinical consultation and the advancement of shared strategic initiatives. The Department of Pathology & Immunology is home to a CPEP accredited fellowship program in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology. Instruction and training of clinical trainees, including microbiology fellows, infectious disease fellows, pathology residents, and medical students, is an important component of this position. In addition, individuals have the opportunity to pursue development of a robust clinical translational research program in an established clinical microbiology research laboratory with a strong history of inter-departmental collaboration with research programs across the Washington University School of Medicine campus.

Candidates must possess a M.D. and/or Ph.D. and be board-certified or board-eligible in clinical microbiology and/or medical microbiology (ABP-MM or ABMM). A successful candidate will have experience in validation and implementation of new laboratory methods, excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
