Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine - Children’s Mercy Hospital Kansas City, MO

Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) in Kansas City, Missouri welcomes nominations and applications for the Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This is an exciting opportunity for a physician leader to sustain a highly effective diagnostic enterprise in a top children’s hospital, to build upon the culture and infrastructure of the department while encouraging collaboration amongst the clinical care, education, and research missions. CMH is an independent, non-profit, 366-bed pediatric health system, providing half a million patient encounters each year for children from across the country. Children’s Mercy is ranked by U.S. News & World Report in nine specialties, is one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals,” and received Magnet® recognition five times for excellence in nursing services. CMH has recently opened the Children’s Mercy Research Institute, a state-of-the-art facility that supports bench to bedside research initiatives. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine employs 26 faculty and 200+ staff across three divisions and processes more than 1 million billable tests per year, including over 7,000 anatomic pathology cases. The department is home to divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, and Clinical Genetics & Genomics, which contains sections of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics & Genomics. CMH is the first pediatric center to offer clinical genome sequencing and remains at the cutting edge of genomic sequencing and research. The Chair will be joining a strong community with highly trained and specialized physicians, scientists, and staff across three strong business units sitting in complex and well-resourced labs that also serve as reference labs for other organizations in the region. Reporting directly to the Physician-in-Chief of CMH, the Chair will engender a culture of engagement and map approaches that improve connectivity both within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and with other hospital and clinic departments. The new Chair will be a creative and innovative builder who will generate support for the high level of subspecialized Pathology faculty and serve as a partner for further integration with CMH’s clinicians. The ideal candidate will bring accomplished business and financial skills and will effectively administer a large clinical service program that has potential for further growth. This individual will be a persuasive communicator with strong interpersonal skills, a respectful and empathetic listener who will develop a strategic vision for the department that fosters scholarship activity, creates greater efficiencies, and continues to strengthen the high quality of service and care across CMH. Candidates must have an MD, DO, MD/PhD or equivalent degree and be board certified in Pediatric Pathology, Medical Genetics, Medical Microbiology and/or a related discipline. The Chair will have substantial experience in the administrative, clinical, educational, and research activities of pediatric pathology.
