Medical Director, Transfusion Medicine - Houston Methodist
The Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist https://www.houstonmethodist.org/for-health-professionals/department-programs/pathology-genomic-medicine/ is recruiting the Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine. The Department is the exclusive provider of pathology services for Houston Methodist Hospital System (Houston Methodist) which has eight hospitals in the greater Houston area https://www.houstonmethodist.org/about-us/. The Department has 90 faculty members and 40 trainees. Houston Methodist has more than 2,700 beds and continues to expand in the Houston metroplex. The Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine will be located at Houston Methodist Hospital, the 1000-bed flagship quaternary care hospital located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The Transfusion Medicine Service provides advanced transfusion medicine services, donor and therapeutic apheresis services, and blood collections. The Medical Director will provide the strategic and tactical leadership to guide the service to meet the continued growth and expanding needs for the provision of care for our patients. The Medical Director will provide leadership to two-full time Transfusion Medicine Pathologists and 2 additional fellow-trained Pathologists board-certified in Blood Banking who provide call coverage for the Transfusion Medicine Service. Outstanding research laboratory space is available to externally funded clinician-investigators.
The Transfusion Medicine Service is accredited by CAP, AABB, and FACT and is registered with the FDA. In addition to providing outstanding clinical service, our faculty educate pathology residents and Transfusion Medicine Fellows. The Texas Medical Center has a vibrant, interactive, and collegial Transfusion Medicine culture that extends across multiple institutions.
Interested candidates must have a proven track record of providing outstanding transfusion medicine service and working effectively with departmental colleagues and other medical staff members, laboratory technical personnel, and hospital administration. Experience leading a Transfusion Medicine Service is a must. Opportunities exist for collaborative research interactions within the Houston Methodist Research Institute and extramurally with Texas Medical Center institutions. Priority will be given to candidates with active research programs and external funding.
Candidates will be pathologists with an MD or MD/PhD, BC in clinical pathology or anatomic pathology and clinical pathology, and BC in Transfusion Medicine. Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience practicing transfusion medicine and must have or be able to obtain a Texas medical license. The successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Houston Methodist Institute for Academic Medicine and Weill Cornell Medical College, Houston Methodist’s primary academic affiliate.
