Co-Director or Associate Director, Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory - Boston Children's Hospital

The Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) at Boston Children’s Hospital (a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School) is seeking an academically oriented, collaborative clinical microbiologist with the appropriate training, experience, and established skill set to join the DLM faculty as a co-Director or Associate Director of the Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (IDDL). The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of experience leading a clinical microbiology laboratory at the Assistant Director, Associate Director, or Director level. Clinical service responsibilities will be focused on infectious diseases diagnostics. Broad clinical microbiology expertise is essential; specific expertise in susceptibility testing is desirable, but not required. A PhD, MD, or MD/PhD degree is required, as is board certification in Clinical Pathology (American Board of Pathology) or Medical Microbiology (American Board of Pathology or American Board of Medical Microbiology).

Applicants should be committed to excellent patient care, as well as research, scholarship, and teaching. The clinical responsibilities will be primarily in bacteriology. This full-time position offers the candidate the opportunity and support to establish a research program focused on clinical or translational research. The DLM environment provides substantial opportunity for research collaborations with investigators at BCH, other Harvard-affiliated institutions, and other institutions throughout the Boston area. Candidates for this position must meet criteria for appointment as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School; thus, the successful candidate will have a track record of scholarship, teaching, clinical leadership and/or mentorship and the potential for continued development in these areas. Appointment as Co-Director or Associate Director, academic rank, and salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and salary will be competitive.

The clinical laboratories and transfusion medicine service within the DLM are currently staffed by 8 faculty at the Director/Associate Director level. The BCH IDDL is a state-of-the-art clinical microbiology laboratory performing a wide range of bacteriologic, fungal, parasitic, and viral testing to support patient care. The IDDL currently has 32 full- and part-time staff and performs over 280,000 tests annually. The laboratory moved to its current newly-renovated location in 2023.

Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, CV, and names/email addresses of three potential references by email to Dr. Nira Pollock at nira.pollock@childrens.harvard.edu. Please note that references will not be contacted until later in the process.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions or any other characteristic protected by law.
