Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy - Columbia University
The Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is recruiting for an MD or MD/PhD academic transfusion medicine physician of any rank to join our faculty as an Assistant or Associate Medical Director of the NewYork-Presbyterian/CUIMC Section of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy (https://www.pathology.columbia.edu/diagnostic-specialties/laboratory-medicine-division/transfusion-medicine-and-cellular-therapy). Applicants should have an established track record of accomplishment within the field of transfusion medicine and cellular therapy, and a demonstrated ability to lead an experienced group of laboratory technologists, supervisors, and staff. In addition to strong clinical and technical skills, particular emphasis is placed on candidates with a demonstrated record of collegiality and inter-departmental collaboration. Applicants must have completed a fellowship in transfusion medicine and be board-certified/board-eligible in Transfusion Medicine through the American Board of Pathology (ABP). The applicant must also satisfy clinical licensing requirements to serve as a Laboratory Director in New York State.
The successful applicant will help oversee diagnostic testing in immunohematology, the collection and preparation of cellular therapy products, consultation regarding the provision of blood products, and the care of patients requiring therapeutic apheresis. The position also includes responsibilities for teaching pathology residents, hematology fellows, transfusion medicine fellows, medical students, and technical staff. Applicants must be currently involved in ongoing clinical, translational, and/or bench research with a track record of publications in the field. The position offers a competitive salary commensurate with training and experience, and an appointment, at the appropriate rank, to the faculty of the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons.
The Section of Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy at NewYork-Presbyterian/CUIMC is located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, offering unparalleled opportunities to work and live in a thriving, diverse, metropolitan environment with access to world-class cultural institutions, restaurants, and entertainment. The Section is located on the 4th floor of the Harkness Pavilion of Presbyterian Hospital with >40 technologists, nurses, and laboratory professionals, who, for example, release >25,000 red blood cell transfusion products and perform >1200 therapeutic apheresis procedures annually. We also direct a cGMP cell processing laboratory and supervise the collection, manipulation, and processing of cells (e.g., hematopoietic stem cells, lymphocytes) and tissues (e.g., pancreatic islets, parathyroid glands) for transplantation. It is also noteworthy that we provide services in a unified way for, not only adult outpatients and inpatients, but also for pediatric inpatients and outpatients at the physically integrated Morgan-Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York.
The Section has an international reputation in transfusion medicine research and supports its faculty members’ clinical, translational, and bench research programs through the Laboratory of Transfusion Biology (https://www.pathology.columbia.edu/research/clinical-and-translational-research/laboratory-transfusion-biology), the Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine (https://www.pathology.columbia.edu/research/clinical-and-translational-research/center-advanced-laboratory-medicine-calm), and the Worldwide Initiative for Rh Disease Eradication (https://wirhe.org/), along with multiple other available mechanisms at Columbia University.
The activities of the Section are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), AABB, FACT, and New York State Department of Health, and the Section is active in the CAP Laboratory Accreditation and Proficiency Testing programs.
