Associate Director, Microbiology Laboratory - Brigham and Women's Hospital

The Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is seeking an Associate Director of Microbiology. The full-service Microbiology Laboratory services a 793-bed hospital within the Mass General Brigham Health Care System and performs >440,000 tests annually, including aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular testing, virology, mycology, AFB, parasitology, and advanced molecular diagnostics.

The candidate should have a MD, PhD or MD/PhD degree and Board certification or Board eligibility in Clinical Pathology and/or Medical Microbiology (ACGME or ABMM). The applicant should have a strong record of training, clinical experience, and academic scholarship in medical microbiology and a strong commitment to a career in academic practice and education. A successful applicant is expected to play an active role in the daily operations of the Microbiology Laboratory including test interpretation, clinical consultation, assay selection, development and implementation, quality improvements, specimen processing and regulatory compliance. The applicant is expected to teach the Microbiology fellow (1-year ACGME-accredited Medical Microbiology fellowship), Clinical Pathology residents and medical students through didactic sessions and clinical supervision. Experience and interest in molecular microbiology, virology, and/or microbiology automation is desirable.

The BWH Department of Pathology has more than 120 faculty members and 55 residents and clinical fellows and offers complete Anatomic and Clinical Pathology services. The Department of Pathology is currently undergoing targeted growth in advanced diagnostic testing and provides unparalleled opportunities for clinical, translational and basic research. Collaborations in many areas of science and access to innovative educational technologies are available in the department and with investigators in multiple Harvard-affiliated institutions, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Mass General Brigham Health Care System.

Applicants should be committed to excellence in patient care, scholarship, and effective teaching. Academic rank at Instructor or Assistant Professor level and salary will be commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
