Title: Medical Director of Laboratory Hematology
The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a Medical Director of Laboratory Hematology for the Core Clinical Laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) on the Clinician Track. BJH is a 1250 bed tertiary care hospital that serves a diverse patient population, including hematology, oncology, surgical, and transplant services. In addition, the Core Laboratory provides services for other hospitals in the BJC HealthCare System, including St. Louis Children’s Hospital and several community hospitals.
The Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine in the Department of Pathology & Immunology is fast paced and dynamic, home to faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and has a long record of innovation, research, and scholarship. The BJH Core Laboratory is located in a newly constructed state of-the art facility, equipped with laboratory automation for CBCs and coagulation testing, automated and manual WBC differentials, complex hemostasis testing, flow cytometry, and serum protein and hemoglobin electrophoresis. The laboratory delivers services in benign and malignant hematology, disorders of hemostasis, and specialized testing for associated diseases (e.g. heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, G6PD deficiency, hemoglobinopathy, platelet function defects).
Clinical duties will include participation in medical director oversight of all areas of the hematology, hemostasis, and electrophoresis laboratory sections, including test development and quality programs, with an expectation for professional sign-out of protein and hemoglobin electrophoresis, flow cytometry, and/or hematopathology (if eligible). The successful applicant will work closely with the adult and pediatric Divisions of Hematology and Oncology and other clinical services. The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University is home to an ACGME-accredited residency program in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology as well as a fellowship program in Hematopathology. Instruction and training of pathology residents and fellows is an essential component of this position. Additional responsibilities will include education of hematology/oncology fellows, medical students, and medical technologists. In addition, the individual will participate in clinical, translational, or basic science research activities.
Basic Qualifications
Candidates must possess a MD or DO and be board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic & Clinical Pathology. Additional certification in Hematopathology is desirable and would be required to sign-out hematopathology cases. A successful candidate will have experience in validation and implementation of new laboratory methods, excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience
