Academic Clinical Microbiologist - University of California San Diego

The Department of Pathology at the University of California San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body seeks an Academic Clinical Microbiologist faculty member to join the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine to serve as an Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories.

The successful candidate will share clinical responsibilities and provide leadership in one or more subsections of the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories, at the state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Laboratory Medicine and the UC San Diego Health Clinical Laboratories at Hillcrest Medical Center and Jacobs Medical Center – La Jolla. All faculty are required to participate in the University's educational mission, by engaging in the teaching of medical/graduate students, residents, or fellows.

Candidates with demonstrated expertise in the clinical applications of next generation sequencing in diagnostic microbiology and virology, and scholarly interests in clinical or translational research in medical or public health microbiology are encouraged to apply.

Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, PhD or equivalent degree(s), and meet the applicable requirements to be eligible for California laboratory director licensure in the specialty of clinical microbiology. Applicants with an MD must also have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit, as determined by the Medical Board of California.

All candidates must be board certified or eligible in Pathology and/or Medical Microbiology with practice experience in diagnostic microbiology and virology. MD applicants who are board certified or eligible in Medical Microbiology, must also be board certified in an ABMS-medical specialty or subspecialty.

The appropriate series and appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales. Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded. As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited.
