Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Chemistry - AACC

The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) welcomes applications for the position of editor in chief (EIC) of its flagship journal, Clinical Chemistry. Published continuously since 1955, Clinical Chemistry is the leading international journal of clinical laboratory science. With an impact factor of 8.327, it is the top-ranked journal in the category of medical laboratory technology.

The EIC determines the content of the journal and is responsible for all editorial decisions and the quality and reputation of Clinical Chemistry. The journal publishes original, important, well-documented, peer-reviewed articles on a diverse range of scientific topics of interest to the readership. Content of an educational nature is also valued as a service to the future of the profession. The EIC appoints and oversees all members of the journal’s editorial board; solicits manuscripts and assigns them to associate and section editors; and communicates publication guidelines and polices. The EIC is the public face of Clinical Chemistry and represents it at meetings, including the AACC Annual Scientific Meeting and at meetings of AACC’s Publications Core Committee, of which the EIC is an ex officio member.

Clinical Chemistry is published monthly in print and online by Oxford University Press on behalf of AACC, and typically presents 200 articles per year from about 2,000 submitted manuscripts. The journal also generates a popular podcast series. AACC will provide staff support, responsible for administrative and operational functions, and a stipend. A transition period will begin Spring 2022; full responsibilities will transfer January 1, 2023, commencing a five-year term. The term is renewable once at the discretion of the AACC Board of Directors.

The successful applicant will be an established scholar in a field of research within the scope of Clinical Chemistry and have a broad interest and knowledge of the field of laboratory medicine and adjacent areas of study, with a keen awareness of new advances. They will demonstrate a compelling strategic vision for the journal’s ongoing development and differentiation from AACC’s other journal, The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine, and other reputable journals in the field; excellent communication and relationship-building skills; a commitment to working collaboratively with the editorial team and staff; a commitment to editorial diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise; an international network of colleagues; and deep editorial experience.

TO APPLY

Applications should consist of a complete CV; a letter (two page maximum) describing your vision and goals for Clinical Chemistry over the next five years (2023–2027), your approach to editing, and how this work will complement your other professional activities; and three references. Finalists will be asked to provide a more detailed description of their vision and goals for the journal in September. Email complete applications by August 31, 2021, to the Chair, Clinical Chemistry Editor in Chief Search Committee, c/o Matt Boyle, AACC Senior Director of Publications, mboyle@aacc.org.

Questions may be sent to Matt Boyle at the same address.
